Former president Mohamed Morsi cut ties with Egypt in support of the
Sunni rebels and now, Egypt’s interim government decided to re-open its
embassy, according to a statement on the website of the Egyptian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. The ministry said that the improving of relations was in response to a demand by Egyptian expatriates in Syria and Syrians in Egypt.
A spokesman for the foreign ministry stated that after the severance of relations, both sides have agreed on maintaining consular relations.
This does not mean that full diplomatic relations are being restored according to Ahram Online, which also stated that until May, the Egyptian embassy in Syria had facilitated the return of over five thousand Egyptians from Syria since the conflict started in 2011.
There are more than 160,000 Syrians in Egypt according to the foreign ministry.
