Thousands of Bulgarians Gather on 19th Day of Anti-Govt Protests

For a 19th day in a row, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Sofia, demanding the resignation of Bulgaria's socialist-led government.

According to reports of the Interior Ministry by 8 pm, Tuesday's rally is attended by around 6500 people.
The demonstration proceeds along the traditional route: Parliament, Eagle's Bridge (Orlov Most), the National Palace of Culture (NDK), the headquarters of center-right party GERB, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, and Eagle's Bridge again as a final destination.

For yet another evening, supporters of the government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski are staging a simultaneous protest in front of the National Palace of Culture (NDK).

The pro-government demonstrators claim that the government has been given too little time to show its true potential and to implement its program.
The supporters of the socialist-led government insist that the legitimately elected cabinet must be given a chance.
The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet resign collectively over ties with oligarchs.
Protesters are also calling for Election Code amendments which will guarantee greater representation of the people in Parliament.

  1. Bulgarians Chant 'Resignation' on 20th Day of Protest....

Thousands of Bulgarians have yet again gathered Wednesday evening in front of the Council of Ministers in downtown Sofia to request the resignation of PM Plamen Oresharski.

This is the 20th consecutive day on which citizens have come out, largely in capital Sofia, to protest against a number of controversial appointments by Oresharski.

Protesters are calling for a change of electoral rules, cabinet resignation, and new snap elections, arguing that early elections on May 12 failed to produce an adequate parliament.

Wednesday was marked by a number of blockades of major central Sofia intersections by protesters, as well as the brief detention of journalist Nayo Titzin.

  2. Thousands of Bulgarians Gather on 21st Day of Anti-Govt Protests...

For the twenty-first day in a row, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Sofia, demanding the resignation of Bulgaria's socialist-led government.

The rally on the previous day, the 20th consecutive day of protests against Bulgaria's Socialist-endorsed government of Plamen Oresharski, was one of the largest ones held in the capital Sofia in the last 15 years.

Over 25 000 gathered Wednesday evening in front of the Council of Ministers in downtown Sofia to request the resignation of the Cabinet Oresharski.

There is a new trend noticed in the last few days with the attendance of the rallies growing after a slowdown at the end of last week and the weekend, attributed mostly to inclement weather.

It took the procession over 40 minutes to pass through the main pedestrian Vitosha Boulevard. When people were still marching there, the first ranks reached the building of the Parliament.

    There were no reported incidents.

There is a counter-protest in support of the Cabinet Oresharski, held every evening in the park near the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, with much lower attendance.

Anti-government protest rallies were held in the cities of Varna and Plovdiv where the attendance was low as well.

A pro-government rally gathered 500 people in the Danube city of Vidin.

The protests are to continue with the morning coffee-drinking anti-government rally in front of the Parliament building. The morning protest is to merge with the traditional afternoon rally, the 21st in a row, starting 6.30 pm in front of the Council of Ministers building.

The series of anti-government protests in Bulgaria was triggered by the scandalous appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the cabinet resign collectively over ties with oligarchs.

Protesters are also calling for Election Code amendments which will guarantee greater representation of the people in Parliament.

  6. Bulgarians Gather for 32nd Evening of Mass Anti-Govt Rallies...

Thousands of Bulgarians have gathered at Nezavisimost (Independence) square in downtown Sofia to protest against the government’s ties with oligarchy for a 32nd day in a row.

“Our demands for resignation are not political, they are surgical,” a banner says, referring to a poll showing that many believe that protests may have “turned political.”
Many protesters are chanting “Mafia!” and “Resignation!” once again, according to reporters.

Demonstrators are expected to arrive at the German embassy in Sofia in order to express their gratitude to Ambassador Matthias Hoepfner, who, together with his French colleague Philippe Autie, warned the Bulgarian government last week that the oligarchic model is incompatible with EU membership.

However, some media reports say that the protesters would head to the German embassy on Tuesday instead of Monday.

Ralliers already thanked Autie by amassing in front of the French embassy in central Sofia, on the eve of France's national holiday, July 14.

On Monday, protesters are also expected to show their support for the Bulgarian National Radio for the extensive and sympathetic coverage it has been giving rallies......http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=152055

  8. Cientos de manifestantes bloquean el Parlamento búlgaro...

  9. Nine injured as protesters blockade Bulgarian parliament....

SOFIA, Bulgaria: At least seven Bulgarian protesters and two policemen were injured in clashes late Tuesday as demonstrators blockaded the parliament building, the first violence seen in 40 days of massive anti-government rallies.

Several thousand protesters blocked the parliament building from the early evening, preventing ministers, lawmakers and other officials from leaving after budget revision discussions.

Among those stuck in the building were three ministers from the embattled Socialist-backed technocrat cabinet along with some 30 lawmakers, journalists, trade union and employers groups members and parliament staff, police said.

The tensions rose shortly after 10:00 pm (1900 GMT) when police tried to evacuate some of them by bus.

About 2,000 protesters cordoned off the building shouting "Mafia!" and "Resign!" and stopped the vehicle.

Stones flew, breaking several windows on the bus, as police in anti-riot gear tried to push the protesters back to make way for the vehicle.

Police asked the crowd, which included many women, to back off but the protesters responded with cries of "no violence", "murderers" and "why do you beat our children?"

After several attempts to leave the area, the bus returned to the building........

11. Protests Trap Bulgarian Lawmakers Inside Parliament...

More than 100 legislators, government ministers, journalists and officials were blockaded inside the Bulgarian Parliament building late Tuesday night and into Wednesday, as the 40th day of largely peaceful street protests in Sofia, the capital, turned confrontational.

Scuffles broke out Tuesday evening when the police tried to clear the crowd to make way for a bus exiting Parliament under heavy guard. Protesters blew whistles, shouted "resign!" and "Mafia!" and threw bottles at the bus, as police officers in riot gear beat them back.

Ultimately the bus was forced to retreat, and by 2 a.m. Wednesday, the protesters had reinforced the blockade with garbage cans, street signs and paving stones, blocking vehicles from leaving any of the exits from Parliament.

Pictures of chaotic confrontations appeared on the evening television news and on Facebook pages, with the national radio reporting that seven protesters were being treated in hospitals for light injuries and Reuters reporting that two police officers were wounded.

The Interior Ministry did not release information about arrests or injuries. In a statement, Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev said that his ministry had "enough strength to guarantee the security of the people in and around the building of the National Assembly," and he called on citizens to be peaceful.....http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=152284

  13. Bulgarische Polizei befreit Abgeordnete .....
