- French FM Fabius: 'No doubt' Assad used chemical weapons
Following his meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius held a press conference in which he said that there was "no doubt" that Assad regime used chemical weapons in an attack last week in a suburbs of Damascus.
"I can also tell you that when three is a crime like this, it is inconceivable that it will go without a strong response," he said. Fabius said the response will be "determined and hard," but declined to go into further details.

On Sunday, both France and the US said they believed the attack involved chemical warheads and came from regime forces, strengthening the case for Western military intervention long-sought by opposition forces.
On Monday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will meet British military chief Gen. Nick Houghton to discuss options for a strike, with a single lighting-quick barrage of strikes fired from warships in the Mediterranean the leading option, the Times reported.
A British government source told the paper that Washington and London are looking at a “very targeted attack” launched within the next 10 days to “prevent and deter” Assad.

Syria appears to have bowed to international pressure to allow UN investigators to travel to the scene of last week's chemical weapons attack in Damascus, allowing a forensic science team to visit the site on Monday.
The green light for the UN inspection came almost five days after the attack and was immediately greeted with scepticism by western leaders and chemical weapons experts, who say it may now be too late for inspectors to gather useful scientific results. An American official told reporters the move was "too late to be credible".
The US, Britain and France have been warning of a "serious response" to the attack, and their rhetoric has been intensifying.
David Cameron is pushing for military action and government sources said the UK and allies were considering a range of options, including air strikes, the imposition of a no-fly zone and arming the rebels in Syria. Syria's Assad dismisses claims of chemical weapon use....

"Failure awaits the United States as in all previous wars it has unleashed, starting with Vietnam and up to the present day," he told the Izvestia daily when asked what would happen if Washington decided to strike or invade Syria.
Assad said Syrian government forces had been close to where rebel forces say chemical weapons were used last week during the country's more than two-year-old civil war.
"Would any state use chemical or any other weapons of mass destruction in a place where its own forces are concentrated? France says would be hard to bypass UN in action against Syria...
Delete(Reuters) - France's foreign minister said on Monday no decision had been made yet on whether to take military action against Syria, but doing so outside the auspices of the U.N. Security Council would be problematic.
"It is a problem that will be difficult," Laurent Fabius told Europe 1 radio.
"International law is defined by the United Nations, but at same time there are countries (on the council) that are blocking (military action)- China and Russia have blocked and would probably block again so it would be a problem...
"In certain circumstances we can bypass it, but international law does exist," he said without elaborating.

Interrogé sur la radio Europe 1 sur une possible «réaction de force» après les soupçons d’utilisation d’armes chimiques contre des civils près de Damas par le régime de Bachar al-Assad, Fabius a indiqué qu’une décision en ce sens «n’était pas encore» prise.
«Ce qui est évident, c’est que ce massacre a pour origine le régime de Bachar al-Assad. Alors après, il faut proportionner les réactions, mesurer, agir à la fois avec détermination et avec sang-froid et c’est cela qui va être arbitré au cours des jours qui viennent», a déclaré le ministre.
«Le président de la République (François Hollande) a dit que c’était un acte inqualifiable. Moi-même j’ai dit qu’il fallait une réponse forte. Das Ermittlerteam reist in den betroffenen Bezirk östlich der syrischen Hauptstadt. Syriens Armee und verbündete Milizen sowie Rebellengruppen sicherten eine Waffenpause während der Untersuchung zu. Die Inspektoren sollen jedoch nur untersuchen, ob tatsächlich Giftgas zum Einsatz gekommen ist. Zu klären, wer den Angriff angeordnet hat, gehört nicht zu ihrem Mandat. Syrie: Londres prêt à participer à l'intervention (journal)....
ReplyDeleteDes navires de guerre britanniques sont prêts à se joindre aux forces navales US en cas d'attaque contre le régime de Bachar el-Assad, rapporte lundi le journal The Telegraph citant une source au sein du gouvernement britannique.
D'après la source, l'opération militaire en Syrie consisterait à porter des frappes de précision avec des missiles de croisière. A l'heure actuelle, des représentants du commandement militaire des deux pays concertent la liste des cibles à frapper.
La raison formelle de l'intervention militaire est l'utilisation présumée d'armes chimiques contre des civils par les forces fidèles au gouvernement de Damas. Selon l'interlocuteur du journal, les négociations entre les dirigeants britanniques et des représentants de pays étrangers, dont les Etats-Unis, vont se poursuivre, mais l'intervention pourrait commencer d'ici la fin de la semaine en cours.
Un sous-marin à propulsion nucléaire de la Marine royale britannique se trouve déjà dans la région tandis qu'un certain nombre de navires de guerre ont récemment quitté la Grande-Bretagne pour des exercices en Méditerranée, indique le quotidien.

China supports U.N. investigation in Syria, urges caution...

"China has paid close attention to the reports of the use of chemical weapons inside Syria, and China resolutely opposes the use of chemical weapons no matter who uses them," Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement on the ministry's website.

Britain says response to Syria chemical attack possible without unanimous UN backing...
ReplyDeleteA response to the use of chemical weapons in Syria is possible without the unanimous consent of the UN Security Council, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague has said.
“I would argue yes it is, otherwise it might be impossible to respond to such outrages, such crimes, and I don't think that's an acceptable situation," Hague said on BBC radio, when asked whether it would be possible to respond to the use of chemical weapons without the backing of the UN Security Council.
Meanwhile, Britain’s Royal Navy is reportedly moving ships into place for a possible strike with the US on Syria in the next few days.

La marina britannica sarebbe pronta ad unire le forze con gli Stati Uniti per un eventuale attacco missilistico in Siria, in uno degli sviluppi possibili in risposta all'escalation dopo il presunto attacco chimico a Damasco dello scorso 21 agosto, e che potrebbe partire già a giorni. Lo riferiscono alcuni giornali britannici. Intanto inizieranno oggi le ispezioni dell'Onu sull'uso di armi chimiche in Siria.

Syrie: deux explosions près de l'hôtel des experts de l'Onu...
ReplyDeleteDeux obus de mortier ont explosé lundi dans le centre de Damas à proximité de l'hôtel où sont logés les experts de l'Onu chargés d'enquêter sur les attaques d'armes chimiques en Syrie, rapportent lundi les médias locaux.
Trois personnes ont été blessées dans l'attaque, attribuée par les autorités syriennes aux combattants anti-Assad.
Les inspecteurs des Nations unies ont quitté l'hôtel Four Seasons lundi pour se rendre dans la banlieue de Ghouta près de la capitale syrienne, site d'une attaque chimique meurtrière présumée perpétrée le 21 août.
Dimanche 25 août, le gouvernement syrien a approuvé le calendrier de visites par les experts onusiens des sites où auraient été utilisées les armes chimiques.
Le bilan de l'attaque de Ghouta, dont les parties syriennes se rejettent la responsabilité, est estimé entre 355 et 1.300 morts.

Η κυβέρνηση της Σαουδικής Αραβίας "καλεί τη διεθνή κοινότητα, η οποία εκπροσωπείται από το Συμβούλιο Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ, να αναλάβει τις ευθύνες της απέναντι στις φρικτές σφαγές που διαπράττει το συριακό καθεστώς χρησιμοποιώντας όπλα κάθε είδους, μεταξύ των οποίων και χημικά όπλα που έχουν απαγορευτεί διεθνώς", τονίζεται στην ανακοίνωση που μεταδόθηκε από το ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο SPA.

Εδώ και μήνες το Ριάντ στηρίζει ξεκάθαρα τους Σύρους αντάρτες και ζητά από τη διεθνή κοινότητα να αναλάβει δράση απέναντι στο καθεστώς του προέδρου Μπασάρ αλ Άσαντ.

UN: Chemical experts can gather evidence in Syria despite time lapse...
ReplyDeleteUNITED NATIONS - The United Nations said on Monday it was still possible for a UN team of chemical weapons experts to gather evidence necessary to investigate last week's alleged gas attack in suburbs east of Damascus, despite the lapse of time.
"Despite the passage of a number of days, the Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon) is confident that the team will be able to obtain and analyze evidence relevant for its investigation of the 21 August incident," UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters. The UN team visited the site on Monday.
Britain said on Sunday that evidence of the attack, which is believed to have killed hundreds of people, could have already been destroyed ahead of a visit to the site by UN inspectors.

Una portavoz de este ministerio, encabezado por Vince Cable, confirmó que en los meses previos al estallido del conflicto en 2011 y antes de las sanciones de la UE el Reino Unido exportó fluoruro al país árabe, si bien, precisó, "no hay pruebas de que se empleara en programas de fabricación de armas".

El ministerio se refirió a este asunto después de que el periódico 'The Mail on Sunday' haya publicado hoy declaraciones de científicos que advierten de que el fluoruro sódico es un componente clave del gas sarín.
Este es el gas que supuestamente se utilizó el pasado agosto en un ataque en las afueras de Damasco que Estados Unidos atribuye al Gobierno de Bashar Asad y que podría motivar una intervención extranjera en Siria.
La portavoz gubernamental subrayó que los controles de exportación del Reino Unido continúan siendo "de los más estrictos del mundo".
Las licencias en cuestión para exportar fluoruro sódico se concedieron en julio de 2004, septiembre de 2005, marzo de 2007, febrero de 2009 y mayo de 2010, el año anterior al levantamiento popular en Siria, especifica la agencia local PA.

UK delivered Syria chemicals needed for sarin production ‘for 6 years’...
ReplyDeleteBritish companies sold sodium fluoride, a key ingredient in the manufacture of the deadly nerve gas sarin, to a Syrian firm from 2004-2010, British media reveal, a sale that has been called ‘disturbing’ following the chemical weapons attack in Damascus.
Between July 2004 and May 2010, the British government issued five export licenses to two companies, allowing them to sell Syria sodium fluoride, necessary for the production of sarin, according to a report in the Daily Mail, a British daily.
Sarin, a nerve gas that is hundreds of times deadlier than cyanide, is considered one of the world’s most dangerous chemical warfare agents. It works on the nervous system, over-stimulating muscles and vital organs, and a single drop can be lethal in minutes. The US, France and Germany say the deadly chemical was used in the attacks of August 21 in the Damascus neighborhood of Ghouta that left hundreds of civilians dead or injured.
The Sunday Mail says UK firms did export sodium fluoride to a Syrian cosmetics firm throughout the six years for what they claim were legitimate purposes. The daily quotes British MPs admitting for the first time that the chemical was delivered to Syria which has been condemned as a ‘grossly irresponsible’ move and a clear violation of international protocol on the trade of dangerous substances.
British MPs signaled their extreme displeasure with the shocking revelations.
"These are very disturbing revelations uncovered by The Mail on Sunday regarding the provision of sodium fluoride to Syria. At no time should we have allowed President Assad’s regime to get its hands on this substance,” Thomas Docherty MP, a member of the Commons Arms Export Controls Committee, said on Saturday.
“Previously we thought that while export licenses had been granted, no chemicals were actually delivered.
