US to help Syrian rebels fight chemical weapons...Non-lethal assistance will include protective gear, medical assistance and training...
ReplyDeleteThe move comes nearly a month after a deadly chemical weapons attack near Damascus that raised the specter of a US military strike and resulted in a diplomatic deal aimed at stripping Syria of its stockpiles of deadly gases. While the White House says the international response should deter future attacks, the authorization of chemical weapons-related assistance signaled that the US was at least preparing for the possibility that the deadly gases might be used again.
The White House said the non-lethal assistance could fall into three categories:
— Chemical weapons-related “personal protective” equipment to international organizations working in Syria, including the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons
— Medical assistance to strengthen local Syrian health care providers’ ability to prepare for and respond to the use of chemical weapons
— Defensive chemical weapons training and protective equipment to vetted members of the Syrian opposition to protect against the use of deadly gases
A senior Obama administration official said the assistance and training would not give the Syrian opposition the ability to prepare, deploy or move the chemical weapons stockpiles. The US says it believes Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government retains control of the deadly gases.
The US had already begun making plans to send the chemical weapons-related assistance to Syria before the Aug. 21 attack, said the official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the aid by name and insisted on anonymity.....http://www.timesofisrael.com/us-to-help-syrian-rebels-fight-chemical-weapons/

Syria slams Western powers' interference in Syrian affairs...
ReplyDeleteDAMASCUS, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Syria's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that talks about the political and constitutional legitimacy in Syria is an "exclusive" right of the Syrian people.
In a statement carried by the state-run SANA news agency, the ministry said that the United States and its allies can't force their will on the Syrian people.
"In a new confirmation about the size of their involvement in the Syrian crisis and their feverish resolve to impose their will and agendas on the Syrian people, the foreign ministers of the United States, France and Britain have tried to promote their contradictory stances through trying to reconcile between their support of terrorism and their allegations about supporting the political process in Syria," the ministry said.
A day earlier, Britain, France and the United States agreed to seek a "tough" UN resolution against Syria over its use and stockpile of chemical weapons.
During talks in Paris, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, U.S. Secretary of State Kerry and British Foreign Secretary William Hague also announced the organization of a "major international gathering" next week in New York to seek further support to the Syrian National Coalition, the main Syrian opposition coalition abroad.
"In order to negotiate a political solution, we need a stronger position," Fabius said, adding that "we therefore intend to strengthen our support to Syrian national coalition rebels. If you want to change the Assad regime without falling in the hands of the terrorists, you have to support the moderate opposition."
Meanwhile, the Syrian Foreign Ministry stressed that "President Bashar al-Assad is the legitimate president that the Syrian people have chosen and will remain so as long as the people of Syria want. "

France’s Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Thursday that there are an estimated 130 French nationals or immigrant fighting in Syria’s conflict, who went on to describe the situation as "worrying"....
ReplyDelete“It worries me because they could represent a potential threat [to France] upon their return,” Valls said in an interview with the France Inter radio station.
Valls pointed out that the number far exceeds that of other recent conflicts in the region, such as Iraq or Afghanistan.
He said that many of those in the country were young, with a history of delinquency, and that the vast majority had been radicalised.

Turkey shuts border gate after clashes on Syrian side...
ReplyDeleteTurkey has temporarily closed its Öncüpınar border gate in the southeastern province of Kilis, after fighting between Syrian rebels and an al-Qaeda front group in the northern town of Azaz.
Fighting between members of al-Qaeda front group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) broke out on Sept. 18 and continued on Thursday, for control of the border town of Azaz, according to activists on the ground.
Some residents said ISIS was in complete control of the town, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said fighting was continuing in small pockets. Azaz, on the Turkish border, was one of the first towns to be overrun, in July 2012, by FSA rebels, who set up their own administration there.
The Öncüpınar crossing in Turkey’s Kilis province sits opposite the Syrian Bab al-Salameh gate, around five kilometers from Azaz.
“It is a temporary measure,” a Turkish diplomat speaking on condition of anonymity told the Hürriyet Daily News, confirming that the Öncüpınar gate had been closed. “At this stage, it has been closed as a precaution because of the mobility on the other side of the border.”.....http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-shuts-border-gate-after-clashes-on-syrian-side.aspx?pageID=238&nID=54744&NewsCatID=338

Kerry says meeting with Syrian rebel group possible...
ReplyDelete(Reuters) - The United States has not met representatives of Syria's Islamic Front but a meeting is possible to broaden the representation of moderate opposition groups in talks to end the Syrian war, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday.
The United Nations has scheduled a peace conference on Syria for January 22 in Geneva to discuss a political transition to lead the country out of war. Key issues over who will attend remain to be ironed out.
"The United States has not met to date with the Islamic Front but it's possible it could take place," Kerry told a news conference in Manila where he is visiting.
"There is an effort afoot among all of the supporting nations of the Syrian opposition to want to broaden the base of the moderate opposition and broaden the base of representation of the Syrian people in the Geneva two negotiation," he added.
State Department officials have said talks with the Islamic Front could include lower-level officials from the United States, Britain and France.
The Islamic Front alliance, a union of six major rebel groups, has overshadowed the more moderate Free Syrian Army brigades, which are led by the Supreme Military Council (SMC) and backed by Western and Arab powers.
The group has rejected the authority of the SMC, the main opposition's military wing. A week ago, the Islamic Front seized control of SMC weapons depots in northern Syria although reasons for the move are unclear.
Last week, Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N. mediator, set a deadline of December 27 for the opposition and Damascus to name their delegations for next month's talks but opposition sources said there were no plans to make a final decision before then.

West trying to 'flirt' with Islamic front in Syrian crisis - Lavrov to RT....
ReplyDeleteRussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is worried that Western politicians are still trying to "flirt" with the Islamic front in Syria, although they are beginning to realize that overthrowing Assad’s regime would play into the hands of terrorists.
RT: Hello Mr. Lavrov, and welcome to RT. Thanks for joining us. Today in the studio we have journalists from RT English, RT Arabic, and RT Spanish. If my colleagues don’t mind, I will start. This year has been a landmark year for Russian diplomacy. What is your personal assessment of the arrangements on Syria and Iran? And what do you think are the prospects for the Geneva-2 talks?
Sergey Lavrov: These are very positive agreements, and I believe they were made possible by our joint efforts. This is further proof that initiatives can only be put into action by our joint and sincere efforts that ensure a balance of interests and are in line with international law. I wouldn't go as far as to say we've made a breakthrough this year in terms of Syria and Iran. First, the agreements to destroy the Syrian chemical arsenal and to convene the Geneva-2 conference, as well as the first stage agreement on further steps to resolve the Iran nuclear issue, are the fruit of years-long efforts. At least when it comes to Syria, we're talking about three years of Russia's consistent efforts of defending international law. The same applies to the progress on Iran. For over three years we'd been seeking two things: first, to get all the parties to the talks to agree that eventually Iran should have a recognized right to develop its peaceful nuclear program and enrich uranium to make fuel for nuclear power plants, while making sure that this program has no military dimension and that it is subject to total control of the IAEA, and providing security of all the countries in the region, including Israel.
But it took a very long time for our Western partners to start reasoning this way, the way which is fair, comprehensive and takes into account the interests of the international community – Western countries, the region's and Iran's interests. It also strengthens the nuclear nonproliferation regime. So we have managed to reach this deal right at the end of the outgoing year. Another thing we have been advocating for years is the necessity to draw up some kind of a roadmap (the expression has become a buzzword now) since you can't resolve a conflict overnight. So we suggested moving forward step by step on the basis of reciprocity, which means Iran is to meet the demands set by the IAEA and supported by the UN Security Council, and the international community, in its turn, starts easing sanctions on Iran. It is supposed to continue until Iran has fully complied with all the requirements and that is the moment when all the sanctions will be lifted. For a few years, we have been advocating these two things: the so-called "endgame" — and the procedure of the dialogue, as well as promoting a political settlement in Syria.
So this breakthrough – if it was, indeed, a breakthrough – was the result of Russia’s long-term efforts and patience. When the Arab Spring began, Russia was said to be on the wrong side of history, to have lost the Arab streetand the Middle East. Unfortunately, at the time our Western partners – and some of our partners in the region, by the way – weren’t looking for solutions that would help stabilize the situation and help the nations in the region to implement their right to a better life, but opted for information warfare tactics. I’m just stating the facts – that’s what was happening at that time, and up until the beginning of this year, but I admit that in the end our Western partners have come to important and wise decisions. So the breakthrough was the result of profound groundwork. ................http://rt.com/politics/official-word/lavrov-syria-geneva-ukraine-746/

UN SG says violence in Syria to benefit those who seek armed interference...
ReplyDeleteUNITED NATIONS, December 27, /ITAR-TASS/. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the escalating violence in Syria would only benefit those who were seeking armed interference in the conflict.
“Further escalation of violence will only serve the agendas of those who see military means as the only way forward, at the expense of the Syrian people who have suffered enough already,” Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.
He urged all parties to the conflict to “adhere to international humanitarian and human rights law.”
“All civilians must be protected in any situation,” the statement said.
Ban spoke out against the use of so-called “barrel bombs” - oil drums filled with explosives and shrapnel and dropped by aircraft - which he said are adding “yet another appalling dimension to the fighting.”
He voiced grave concern about the continued and indiscriminate use of heavy weapons and mortar shelling in the ongoing conflict, most recently in hard-hit Aleppo which has been the site of a “barrel bomb” campaign.
More than 100,000 people have already been killed in Syria and 8 million driven from their homes, with 2 million of them seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, since the conflict first erupted in March 2011.
