Turkish warplanes shoot down Syrian helicopter. -Syrian plane was detected two kilometers (1.2 miles) inside Turkish airspace

Al Arabiya

Turkish warplanes downed a Syrian helicopter on Monday after it violated Turkish airspace.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said a Syrian plane was detected two kilometers (1.2 miles) inside Turkish airspace at 2:20pm (1120 GMT).

“It was continuously warned by our air defense but as the violation continued, it fell on Syrian soil, having been hit by missiles from our planes,” he added, according to statements carried by Agence France Press.

Turkey, one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's fiercest critics, has advocated military intervention in Syria and grown frustrated over what it sees as Western indecisiveness.

  4. Turkey conducted ‘punitive action’ by shooting Syrian helicopter, Turkish FM says...

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has said that Turkey conducted a “punitive action” by downing a Syrian helicopter, justifiable in terms of international justice and rules of engagement as the helicopter violated Turkish air space despite warnings.

A Syrian helicopter was shot down by The Turkish Air Force at the border after the helicopter violated Turkish airspace.

Davutoğlu stressed that Turkey would not accept any violation of its borders.

"As it was before, we are decisive about protecting our borders and citizens to the end ... The necessary information [about the incident] will be handed to NATO, the United Nations Security Council, and the U.N. General Secretary," he said.

"Nobody will dare to violate Turkey's borders again. The necessary measures have been taken," the foreign minister added.

  5. Syrian Army: Downed Helicopter Not on Combat Mission ...

The Syrian army slammed the Turkish warplanes’ shooting down of a Syrian military helicopter as hasty saying the helicopterpter was not on a combat mission.

The army statement described Turkey’s move in downing the helicopter as “hasty", adding that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government is trying to escalate tensions with such a move.

"Given that the helicopter was on its way back and that it was not on a combat mission, the hasty Turkish reaction is proof of the true intentions of Erdogan's government towards Syria, which are to create tension and escalate the situation at the border between the two countries," it added.

The statement also noted that the military helicopter was "lost... while it was on a reconnaissance mission to monitor the infiltration of terrorists via the Turkish border".

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc told reporters that a Syrian MI-17 helicopter was downed over the southern province of Hatay after it strayed two kilometers into Turkish airspace.

Arinc said there was no information about the fate of the crew because the helicopter fell on Syrian soil. He also noted that Turkish air defense had repeatedly warned the Syrian helicopter to leave Turkey's airspace before being hit by missiles.

  6. Turkey expects no retaliation after shooting Syrian helicopter...

Underlining that a Syrian military helicopter shot down by Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on Sept. 16 had violated the Turkish air space on purpose, not “mistakenly” as claimed by the Syrian military, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Sept. 17 that they expected no retaliation from the Syrian regime.

Davutoğlu, speaking in an interview with A Haber television channel, however, also declared his country’s readiness in case of a new threat against its security and national interests.

Turkey is ready for any kind of possibility, Davutoğlu replied when asked whether they expected any retaliation from Syria.

“Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces are both instructed and prepared in such a way as to be capable of responding in an instant to all kinds of violations against the security of our country and borders. In that regard, in order to protect our security and national interests, we are prepared for all kinds of developments that may take place from now on in regard to all scenarios. However, we are not expecting any retaliation,” Davutoğlu added.

The Turkish minister was reminded of the Syrian army’s statement in which it blamed the Turkish side for showing “a hasty reaction.”

“A comment such as ‘hastiness’ is actually an acknowledgement of the crime,” Davutoğlu said, reiterating that such a statement itself exposed that the Syrian side committed a border violation.

  7. Army downed Syrian helicopter 'according to rules of engagement,’ Turkish PM says...

The government has provided the Turkish army with the authority to act according to the rules of engagement in the event of any border violation, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said today in regard to the military’s downing of a Syrian helicopter the previous day.

Asked by reporters if the army had informed the government about the Syrian helicopter’s violation before taking the decision to shoot it down, Erdoğan said the military was instructed to execute the rules of engagement.

“We have given our Armed Forces authority in certain areas. With respect to the Syrian issue, we have carried out a delegation of authority in terms of the rules of engagement,” Erdoğan said during a joint press conference in Ankara with visiting Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

“We had stated before that the rules of engagement would be implemented. There was a border violation of up to two kilometers,” Erdoğan said, emphasizing that the Syrian pilots had not changed the helicopter’s course despite repeated warnings.

“When the warnings were not heeded, the Turkish Armed Forces executed the rules of engagement,” he said.
