U.N. chief Ban says invites Iran to Syria peace talks....
ReplyDelete(Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Sunday he had invited Iran to attend the first day of Syria peace talks on January 22 in Montreux, Switzerland and that Tehran had pledged to play a "positive and constructive role" if it was asked to participate.
More than 100,000 people have been killed and over 2 million have fled Syria during the nearly three-year civil war.
Western and Gulf Arab nations say they have been reluctant to the support the idea of Iran participating at all because it is supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad militarily and has never backed a plan for a political transition in Syria agreed at an international conference in Geneva in June 2012.
Ban said he had spoken at length with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in recent days and that he believed Tehran supported for the Geneva 2012 plan.
"He has assured me that like all the other countries invited to the opening day discussions in Montreux, Iran understands that the basis of the talks is the full implementation of the 30 June, 2012, Geneva communique," he said.
"Foreign Minister Zarif and I agreed that the goal of the negotiations is to establish by mutual consent a transitional governing body with a full executive powers," Ban said. "It was on that basis that Foreign Minister Zarif pledged that Iran would play a positive and constructive role in Montreux."
"Therefore as convener and host of the conference I have decided to issue an invitation to Iran to participate," Ban said. "Iran needs to participate as one of the important neighboring countries."
Ban said he expected Iran would issue a statement soon in response to his invitation.
Earlier this year the United States said that Iran might play a role on the sidelines of the Syria peace conference in Montreux. Tehran dismissed the idea of being relegated to the sidelines, saying it was beneath Iran's dignity.
The key players in the talks are Assad's government and opposition rebels who have been fighting for nearly three years to oust him.
Ban said he had invited on Sunday a total of 10 additional countries to attend on January 22 - the Vatican, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Greece, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Korea and Iran. Speaking to reporters at U.N. headquarters, Ban made clear that the full negotiations between the government and opposition would begin in earnest on January 24 in Geneva....................http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/20/us-syria-un-iran-idUSBREA0I0K920140120

Syria peace talks hit snag over Iran invite.....
ReplyDeleteThe Syrian opposition threatened on Sunday to pull out from upcoming peace talks with global powers and the Syrian regime after the United Nations invited Iran to attend the conference.
U.N. leader Ban Ki-moon said Iran had pledged in the talks, due to start on Wednesday in the Swiss town of Montreux, to play a “positive and constructive role” in efforts to end Syria’s civil war.
But the announcement prompted the Syrian National Coalition to warn that it may withdraw from from the negotiations. It warned that it would not attend unless the invitation was retracted.
The Syrian National Coalition had only decided on Saturday to attend the conference and talks between Assad’s government and the opposition are due to start in Geneva on Friday.
Spokesman Louay Safi announced on the coalition’s Twitter account that the opposition group would withdraw “unless Ban Ki-moon retracts Iran’s invitation.”
The United States also said Ban should withdraw the invitation unless Iran, a key backer of President Bashar al-Assad, gives “explicit” support to the conference aim of setting up a transitional government in Syria.
“The United States views the U.N. secretary general’s invitation to Iran to attend the upcoming Geneva conference as conditioned on Iran’s explicit and public support for the full implementation of the Geneva communique,” U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
“This is something Iran has never done publicly and something we have long made clear is required.”
Ban told a news conference he extended a late invitation after intense talks over two days with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
“Foreign Minister Zarif and I agree that the goal of the negotiations is to establish, by mutual consent, a transitional governing body with full executive powers,” Ban told reporters.
“He assured me again and again that Iran, if they are invited, then they will play a very positive and constructive role,” the U.N. secretary-general added.
The United States and other Western powers had opposed Iran’s attendance at the meeting as long as it refused to accept a communique adopted by the major powers in Geneva on June 30, 2012, calling for a transitional government in Syria.
Washington made a new call for a clear signal from Tehran, a financial and military supporter of Assad, that it back efforts to set up a transitional government.
Up until Ban’s announcement, Iran had only said it would go to the peace talks if there was an invitation without conditions.........http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2014/01/20/Syria-peace-talks-hit-snag-over-Iran-invite.html

Saudi Arabia: Iran ‘not eligible’ to attend Syria talks...
DeleteSaudi Arabia said on Monday Iran was not eligible to attend the Geneva 2 peace talks on Syria, following the U.N. invite to Tehran to attend the conference later this week.
"Iran is not eligible to attend. Inviting any party to the Geneva 2 talks is dependent on their support of a transitional government,” a statement from the Saudi government read, broadcast by Al Arabiya News Channel.
“Iran has not voiced its support for a transitional Syrian government and has troops fighting alongside [Syrian President Bashar] al-Assad," the statement added.
The Syrian opposition threatened on Sunday to pull out from upcoming peace talks with global powers and the Syrian regime after the U.N. invited Iran to attend the conference.

U.S. official: Iran not eligible for Syria talks...
DeleteThe United States is in talks with the United Nations over the surprise invitation of Iran to attend to the Geneva II peace conference on Syria and expects the invite to be rescinded, a U.S. official said Monday.
Iran has “never endorsed the Geneva I communique” which calls for a transitional government in Syria and “we expect the invitation will be rescinded,” a senior State Department official said.
The United States earlier said the United Nations should withdraw the invitation unless Iran, a key backer of President Bashar al-Assad, gives “explicit” support to the conference aim of setting up a transitional government in Syria.

“I believe the expanded international presence on that day will be an important and useful show of solidarity in advance of the hard work that the Syrian Government and opposition delegations will begin two days later in Geneva,” the Secretary-General stated, adding that he believes strongly that Iran needs to be part of the solution to the Syrian crisis.............http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=46960&Cr=Syria&Cr1=#.Utzjxvv8Kt8
