Κατόπιν προσκλήσεως του Γενικού
Γραμματέα του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών, Ban Ki-moon, ο Αντιπρόεδρος της
Κυβέρνησης και Υπουργός Εξωτερικών, Ευάγγελος Βενιζέλος, θα μεταβεί στο
Μοντρέ της Ελβετίας, προκειμένου να συμμετάσχει, την Τετάρτη 22
Ιανουαρίου 2014, στη Συνάντηση Υψηλού Επιπέδου, με την οποία θα
εκκινήσει η Διάσκεψη της Γενεύης για τη Συρία (Γενεύη ΙΙ).
Η συμμετοχή του κ. Βενιζέλου στη Διάσκεψη της Γενεύης υπογραμμίζει το ενδιαφέρον και την υποστήριξη της Ελλάδας για την εξεύρεση, μέσω της πολιτικής και διπλωματικής οδού, μιας οριστικής και βιώσιμης λύσης, η οποία θα τερματίσει το δράμα του συριακού λαού. Τη θέση αυτή, η οποία διαμορφώνεται με γνώμονα το σεβασμό του διεθνούς ανθρωπιστικού δικαίου και την προαγωγή της σταθερότητας στην περιοχή της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου, ανέπτυξε ο Αντιπρόεδρος της Κυβέρνησης και Υπουργός Εξωτερικών, τόσο κατά τη διάρκεια του Συμβουλίου Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων που πραγματοποιήθηκε σήμερα, στις Βρυξέλλες, με κύριο θέμα την προετοιμασία της Διάσκεψης της Γενεύης, όσο και στις κατ’ ιδίαν επαφές που είχε στην Ουάσιγκτον και στο Παρίσι με τους ομολόγους του.

At the invitation of UN Secretary
General Ban Ki-moon, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
Evangelos Venizelos will travel to Montreux, Switzerland, on 22 January
2014 to attend the High-Level Meeting launching the Geneva Conference on
Switzerland (Geneva II).
Mr. Venizelos’ participation in the Geneva II conference underscores Greece’s interest in and support for the finding – through the political and diplomatic route – of a definitive and viable solution that will end the Syrian people’s ordeal.

This position, formulated on the basis of respect for international
humanitarian law and the promotion of stability in the Eastern
Mediterranean region, was set out by Mr. Venizelos at today’s EU Foreign
Affairs Council in Brussels – the main subject of which was preparation
for the Geneva Conference – and in his recent one-on-one meetings with
his counterparts in Paris and Washington.
