Detention of A Nikkei Employee by Chinese Authorities (U.S. State Department)

Office of the Spokesperson, May 30, 2014:

Question: What is your reaction to the reported detention of a Nikkei employee by Chinese authorities?

Answer: We are concerned by the detention of Xin Jian [pron: SHEEN Jen], an employee of the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.

The detention of Ms. Xin appears to be part of an ongoing crackdown on freedom of expression that has targeted bloggers, journalists, and others.

We believe that censorship of the media and detention of journalists for pursuing politically sensitive stories are incompatible with China’s aspirations to build a modern, information-based economy and society.

We urge China to respect fundamental freedoms, including the freedoms of press, expression, peaceful assembly, religion, and association.
