Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Francois Hollande discussed the situation in Ukraine in a telephone conversation initiated by France on Friday, according to Interfax.
"The Russian president pointed to the need for the Kiev authorities to immediately stop violence and bloodshed and start a direct dialogue with representatives of the country's southeast," the Kremlin press service said.
The two presidents also discussed their upcoming bilateral meeting in Paris on June 5.

The heads of state discussed their upcoming bilateral meeting in Paris on June 5, 2015. Vladimir Putin confirmed his readiness to participate in celebratory events in Normandy on June 6, honouring the 70th anniversary of the Allied landing.
The two Presidents continued an exchange of views on developments in Ukraine. The President of Russia noted the need for an immediate end to the violence and bloodshed by Kiev authorities and the launch of a direct dialogue between Kiev and representatives from southeastern Ukraine.
