Air strikes on Islamic State bases in Syria inadmissible without Damascus consent (Putin)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss the fight against the Islamic State extremist group, the Kremlin press service reported on Tuesday.

“Mr. Putin and Mr. Ban exchanged views on pooling the international community’s efforts in the fight against the Islamic State group,” the press service said.

“The Russian side stressed that air strikes on the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) terrorist bases in the Syrian territory should not be launched without consent of the Syrian government,” the Kremlin said.

Areas along the Iraq-Syria border were also hit.

"There are tens of wounded and dead," Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Observatory, which gathers information from a network of activists on the ground, told Reuters news agency by phone.

    1. Israel downs Syria warplane above Golan Heights ....

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter jet over the Golan Heights on Tuesday, the army said, indicating that it had crossed the ceasefire line into the Israeli-occupied sector.

It was the most serious incident to take place on the strategic plateau since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

“A warplane that penetrated Israeli territory was successfully shot down a short while ago by the air defense systems along the Syrian border,” a military statement said, without giving further details.

Army radio said it was apparently a MiG-21 fighter jet which was shot down by a surface-to-air Patriot missile, with the wreckage landing on the Syrian-controlled side of the plateau.

The downing came just three weeks after Israel shot down a drone over the Golan as heavy fighting raged on the Syrian side, most of which has been seized by rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

Since the uprising erupted more than three years ago, the plateau has been tense, with a growing number of rockets and mortar rounds hitting the Israeli side, most of them stray, prompting occasional retaliatory fire.

But there have been several incidents of intentional fire, one of which killed an Israeli teenager in June.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan during the Six-Day War of 1967, then annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Some 510 square kilometers of the Golan remain on the Syrian side of the ceasefire line, with UN forces overseeing a buffer zone stretching some 70 kilometers from Lebanon in the north to Jordan in the south.

  4. Syria Informed by the US Before Airstrikes Conducted...

The United States briefed the Syrian envoy to the UN before it conducted the most recent airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria, said the Syrian foreign minister on Tuesday, as reported by the AP.

“The American side informed Syria's permanent envoy to the UN that strikes will be launched against the Daesh terrorist organization in Raqqa," the ministry said in a statement.

Daesh is the Arabic name of IS. It is used by the Syrian government and several other countries to denote the terrorist group without giving it de facto “State” status.

The news comes on the heels of American airstrikes conducted around the city and province of Raqqa, the self-proclaimed capital of the terrorist group. According to Fox News, the airstrikes targeted about 20 IS facilities, including training sites and arms depots. The United States reportedly used B-1 bombers, F-16 and F-18 fighters, MQ-1 Predator drones and Tomahawk missiles fired from the USS Arleigh Burke destroyer, deployed in the Red Sea................http://en.ria.ru/world/20140923/193189485/Syria-Informed-by-the-US-Before-Airstrikes-Conducted.html
