Hong Kong Democracy Protesters Look for Outside Support

Pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong have been greeted mostly with silence by foreign governments, frustrating protest organizers.
Many countries in the region are not democracies, while others may be hesitant to release statements that would almost certainly draw the ire of Hong Kong's powerful overseer, the Chinese government.
"Once again, democratic govs are not speaking up for democracy" as it relayed the U.S. consulate's statement, which it described as "mealy-mouthed," the Twitter feed of Occupy Central lamented.

'We do not take sides'
The two paragraph statement, issued by the consulate midday Monday, noted the United States' strong support for Hong Kong's fundamental freedoms, "such as freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and freedom of the press."

It added: "We do not take sides in the discussion of Hong Kong's political development, nor do we support any particular individuals or groups involved in it."

The consulate called for "all sides to refrain from actions that would further escalate tensions, to exercise restraint, and to express views" on Hong Kong's political future in a peaceful manner.

The foreign office of the United Kingdom said Monday it is carefully monitoring events and "expresses concern about the situation in Hong Kong and encourages all parties to engage in constructive criticism."
Thousands of demonstrators kept vigil Monday at key intersections in the special administrative region of China, but the Hong Kong government said it had withdrawn riot police after the previous evening's chaos because "citizens have mostly calmed down."............................http://www.voanews.com/content/hong-kong-democracy-protesters-look-for-outside-support/2465930.html

  2. Hong Kong Protesters Set Wednesday Deadline for Reforms ....

Protesters camped out in Hong Kong for a fifth consecutive day are threatening to expand their campaign of civil disobedience if the territory's chief executive does not meet their demand for democratic reforms.

In a short statement, the Occupy Central group said it will announce plans for its next stage of civil disobedience on Wednesday if Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying does not meet their demands, which include his resignation.

Leung has so far given no signs he will back down. In a speech Tuesday, Leung called for Occupy Central leaders to "fulfill the promise they made to society" and immediately stop the protests, which he said have gotten "out of control."

It was Leung's first comment since Sunday, when baton-wielding police used large amounts of tear gas and pepper spray to violently disperse the peaceful protesters...................http://www.voanews.com/content/hong-kong-protesters-reforms-deadline/2467022.html

  3. Protestors ignore Hong Kong leader's call to end demo....

Hong Kong's embattled leader called Tuesday for an immediate end to street demonstrations that have drawn tens of thousands and paralyzed the city, but protesters refused to move until Beijing grants the financial hub genuine democracy.

In his first public comments since demonstrators were tear gassed by riot police on Sunday evening, chief executive Leung Chun-ying said protests organized by the pro-democracy Occupy Central group had got "out of control".

"Occupy Central founders had said repeatedly that if the movement is getting out of control, they would call for it to stop. I'm now asking them to fulfil the promise they made to society, and stop this campaign immediately," Leung said.......................http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/rest-of-world/Protestors-ignore-Hong-Kong-leaders-call-to-end-demo/articleshow/43873451.cms
