Greek parliament approves holding referendum on July 5

The Greek parliament has voted in favor of holding a referendum on July 5 on creditor proposals. The prime minister’s motion was supported by 178 of 300 lawmakers, with 120 voting against it.

"In accordance with the government’s proposal, during the proposed referendum the Greek people will have to decide by vote whether the government should accept or reject the draft agreement submitted by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund at the Eurogroup meeting on June 25, 2015," the parliament meeting program said.

The document consists of two parts - "Reforms for the completion of the Current Program" and "A preliminary analysis of debt sustainability."

Tsipras announced his decision overnight on Saturday to hold a referendum on creditor proposals on July 5. According to him, Greek citizens will have to express their attitude towards the debt settlement plan prepared by the lenders in exchange for reforms.
