The Hungarian government will introduce radical measures to curb the migrant crisis in the country in the middle of September, the Hungarian prime minister’s chief of staff said Thursday.
"The situation will change cardinally after September 15," Janos Lazar said, adding that the government intends to implement "physical, human and legal measures."
According to the official, the fence on the country's border with Serbia is to be physical barrier, soldiers deployed on the border will represent a human barrier, while changes to the country's criminal code are to constitute a legal barrier to migrants.
Lazar added that starting from September 15, the illegal crossing of the fence will be regarded as a crime.
In August, Hungary completed the construction of a 108-mile fence on its southern border with Serbia to deter migrants from entering the country, triggering a wave of criticism from other members of the European Union.
Hungary is being used as a gateway to wealthier EU countries by thousands of migrants. As a result, the country is experiencing an unprecedented influx of undocumented immigrants. Budapest estimates that over 156,000 migrants have illegally entered the country since the beginning of 2015.

Confrontation as Hungary police force migrants off train...
ReplyDeleteHungarian police halted a train packed with migrants bound for the Austrian border and tried to force them to disembark in a town with a detention camp on Thursday, a confrontation that has become a focus of Europe's migration crisis.
After shutting migrants out of the main train station in the capital Budapest for two days, authorities allowed exhausted and confused migrants to board a westbound train. Hundreds crammed aboard clinging to doors and squeezing their children through open carriage windows.
But instead of proceeding to the Austrian border, the train was stopped just west of Budapest in the town of Bicske, where Hungary has a migration reception center, and police ordered the migrants off.
Police cleared one carriage, while five more stood at the station in the heat. Fearing detention, some migrants banged on windows chanting "No camp! No camp!"
One group pushed back dozens of riot police guarding a stairwell to fight their way back on board. One family - a man, his wife and their toddler - made their way along the track next to the train and lay down in protest. The Hungarian government is planning to launch a publicity campaign to try to keep migrants from leaving home, a bulletin by the Office of the Prime Minister announced on Wednesday...
ReplyDeleteIt said the campaign would be short but focused. The government plans to publish announcements in local languages to appear in "leading newspapers in countries of origin and transit countries most associated with illegal migration," it said. It also plans to use billboards, flyers, and Internet platforms.
The bulletins will warn that Hungary plans to declare an illegal border crossing a felony punishable by imprisonment but that it would treat refugees entering the country legally in conformity with European Union and humanitarian norms.
The government hopes the move will reduce the number of people attempting to cross into Hungary since a similar campaign by Germany, the Prime Minister's Office wrote, significantly reduced travel from Kosovo.
Meanwhile, police have continued to prevent the roughly 3,000 migrants gathered in front the Eastern (Keleti) Railway Station from boarding trains to Austria and Germany. According to news portal index.hu, police have been using loudspeakers to tell the crowd that people would have to go to immigration centers and be registered before they would be allowed to travel.
At the same time, Budapest mayor Istvan Tarlos told commercial InfoRadio that the city had obtained tents able to accommodate 300-500 people but has not said when or where the tents would be set up.
According to border police, another roughly 2,000 people had crossed into Hungary over the past 24 hours.

Refugees 'threaten Europe's Christian identity': Orban ...
ReplyDeleteHungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned on Sept.3 that the wave of refugees and migrants coming to Europe and the EU's "failed immigration policy" threaten to undermine the continent's Christian roots.
"If you're being overrun, you can't accept" migrants, he wrote in German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, adding that most were Muslims, not Christians.
"We must not forget that those who are coming in have been brought up under a different religion and represent a profoundly different culture," wrote the conservative leader, who was visiting Brussels on Sept.3.
"The majority are not Christians but Muslims. That is an important question because Europe and European culture have Christian roots.
"Or is it not already, and in itself, alarming that Europe's Christian culture is barely able to uphold Europe's own Christian values?"
Orban defended his government's controversial decision to build a fence along its Serbian border in an effort to stop and slow the influx of people fleeing war and misery.
"The people want us to control the situation and protect our borders," he wrote.
"Only when we have protected our borders can we ask questions about the numbers of people we can take in, or whether there should be quotas."
He added that it was "pretty depressing that, aside from Hungary -- or the Spaniards -- no-one wants to protect the borders of Europe."

Flüchtlinge in Bicske treten in Hungerstreik...
ReplyDeleteAuf der Bahnstation der ungarischen Stadt Bicske leisten seit Donnerstag rund 500 Flüchtlinge gegen die Räumung ihres Zuges Widerstand. Die ungarische Polizei hatte den Zug in dem Vorort von Sopron gestoppt, der eigentlich nach München fahren sollte, wie es zuerst hieß. Laut Medienberichten begannen die Migranten Freitag früh mit einem Hungerstreik. Viele demonstrierten vor den Zügen und riefen, sie wollten nicht in ein Flüchtlingslager. "Lasst uns alle nach Wien marschieren", sang eine Gruppe von Flüchtlingen, die zu Fuß nach Österreich gehen will, berichtet ein Buzzfeed-Journalist. "Ungarn wird uns kein besseres Leben geben", erzählte der Organisator des Marsches.
Trotz Aufforderungen der Polizei in verschiedenen Sprachen sind die Migranten nicht bereit, den Zug zu verlassen und sich in ein Lager in der Nähe transportieren zu lassen, wo sie registriert werden sollen. Aus Protest würden sie Essen und Trinken, mit dem sie die Polizei versorgt, aus dem Fenster werfen. Auch das Aufnahmelager in Bicske, einem Vorort von Budapest, ist scheinbar maßlos überfüllt, die Versorgungslage ist schlecht. Kinder hätten die Nacht auf dem Boden verbringen müssen, berichtet der ORF. Toiletten seien zum Teil außer Betrieb.
