UK plan to join Syria air strikes threatened by Corbyn

Prime Minister David Cameron's hope that Britain would join air strikes against Islamic State (IS) group targets in Syria is fading due to the likely election of anti-war campaigner Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the opposition Labour Party.

After parliament returns Monday, Cameron's centre-right government had hoped to call a vote on the issue in a bid to extend Britain's current role in coalition air strikes against IS targets in Iraq.

But Corbyn, a leading opponent to the 2003 Iraq war who wants to apologise over the conflict if elected leader of Britain's main opposition party on September 12, is deeply opposed to the move.

"I will only proceed going further on this issue if there is genuine consensus in the United Kingdom about it before going back to parliament," Cameron said during a press conference on Friday.

Cameron stressed that military action against IS was part of the "comprehensive programme" he envisages to tackle the migrants crisis which has seen thousands of people, including many Syrians, flock to Europe.

Lawmakers in parliament's foreign affairs committee are due to discuss possible air strikes on Tuesday.

The prime minister cannot secure the necessary parliamentary approval for air strikes without opposition support due to a slim parliamentary majority and the opposition of some of his own MPs.

"He thinks there is a case for taking further action against ISIL (another term for IS) but he would prefer to proceed in a consensual way," Cameron's spokeswoman told reporters recently.

This looks impossible under a Corbyn leadership.

"I'm not convinced that air strikes in Syria will do any good other than kill a lot of civilians and other people," Corbyn told AFP at a campaign event last week...

  3. Syria slams British meddling after intervention signal...

Syria's foreign ministry on Sunday condemned British "interference" in its affairs, after a senior government minister signalled Britain was moving closer to military action in the war-torn country.

State news agency SANA said the foreign ministry had sent two letters to United Nations chiefs which objected to "brazen standpoints" taken by British officials, and accused Britain and France of a "colonialist" agenda.

On Saturday, Chancellor George Osborne said Britain and Europe had to find a way to tackle the conflict in Syria, which has fuelled Europe's biggest refugee crisis since World War Two, and described the government of President Bashar al-Assad as "evil."

"You've got to deal with the problem at source, which is this evil Assad regime and the ISIL (Islamic State) terrorists, and you need a comprehensive plan for a more stable, peaceful Syria," Osborne told Reuters in an interview.

The Sunday Times newspaper said British Prime Minister David Cameron wanted to hold a vote in parliament in early October to pave the way for air strikes against IS in Syria, joining an international coalition led by the United States which has been carrying out such strikes for the past year.

However, Osborne said on Sunday that the government would not call such a vote unless it could guarantee opposition support. 4.

  5. Jeremy Corbyn, the favorite to claim Labour Party leadership, said he was “very concerned” about the U.K. strikes targeting individuals in Syria...

Corbyn’s remarks came following Prime Minister David Cameron’s revelation of U.K. army strikes that killed two British citizens fighting alongside Daesh.

“I am very concerned that the government launched a strike against individuals in Syria and I am concerned that there is no legal base for that,” Corbyn told Anadolu Agency before the final campaign meeting held in North London after voting for party leadership ended Thursday.

“There was a parliamentary vote in 2013 and it did not authorize military intervention and any action taken by the British government and British military has to be in the law,” Corbyn said.

The representative of the Labour Party's left wing also addressed the refugee issue plaguing European relations, saying: “The U.K. has got to do more in the refugee crisis.”

Prime Minister David Cameron had pledged to take in 20,000 Syrian refugees, which, the Labour Party has argued, means only 4,000 would arrive this year.

Welcoming the changing public mood on the issue, the MP for the Islington North constituency -- in London -- since 1983 has called on the government to do more.

“I call on the British government to do more, not just for the Syrian refugees, but also for the migrants, refugees also stuck in camps in Calais [in the north of France],” he said.

“It is not just Syria. Syria is the biggest cause, sure, but […] there are more displaced people around the world than ever recorded in history,” Corbyn said................http://www.aa.com.tr/en/headline/591203--corbyn-concerned-about-uk-airstrikes-in-syria
