Kerry spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, discussing with him the reports of Russia's ambitions to boost its military intervention in the Arab country.
The New York Times reported on Friday that Russia had sent a military advance team to Syria and was taking other steps that Washington fears may signal plans to vastly expand its military support for President Bashar al-Assad.
The paper said the moves included the recent transport of prefabricated housing units for hundreds of people to a Syrian airfield and the delivery of a portable air traffic control station there.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin was asked Friday whether Russia was taking part in military operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group in Syria.
"We are looking at various options but so far what you are talking about is not on the agenda," he said.
"To say we're ready to do this today - so far it's premature to talk about this. But we are already giving Syria quite serious help with equipment and training soldiers, with our weapons," RIA Novosti state news agency quoted Putin as saying.
It made no mention of US concerns about a possible Russian military buildup, but said the two discussed "different aspects of the situation in Syria and its environs, as well as the objectives of the fight against ISIL and other terrorist groups".
Moscow has never voiced support for moderate Syrian rebels and has referred to them as "terrorists" because of their opposition to Assad forces.
The US fears Russia's alleged military buildup in Syria would counter Syrian groups who are battling both ISIL and government troops.

ReplyDeleteDie Vereinigten Staaten haben Angst vor einer weiteren Eskalation des Konflikts in Syrien, sollte Moskau Truppen schicken. Russland hat Kriegsmaterial dorthin gebracht und nun die Möglichkeit 3000 Soldaten und Kampfflugzeuge dort zu stationieren.
Seitdem Waldimir Putin bekannt gegeben hat, gegebenenfalls mit russischen Militär gegen die Truppen des „Islamischen Staats“ zu kämpfen, wächst die Angst in Washington. Nun haben die Vereinigten Staaten Russland offiziell vor einem möglichen Truppenaufbau in Syrien gewarnt.
Wie das amerikanische Außenamt mitteilte, sprach Außenminister John Kerry am Samstag in einem Telefonat mit seinem russischen Kollegen Sergej Lawrow „amerikanische Besorgnisse“ über Berichte an, „die auf einen dortigen unmittelbaren erhöhten russischen Militäraufbau hindeuten“.
Kerry habe klar gemacht, „dass diese Aktionen, sollten solche Berichte akkurat sein, den Konflikt weiter eskalieren könnten“. Sie könnten zu einem größeren Verlust unschuldiger Menschenleben führen und die Flüchtlingsströme vergrößern. ReplyDeleteLe secrétaire d’Etat américain, John Kerry, a appelé son homologue russe, Sergueï Lavrov, pour lui exprimer l’« inquiétude des Etats-Unis » quant à un éventuel engagement militaire de Moscou en Syrie, a indiqué le département d’Etat samedi 5 septembre.
« Le secrétaire d’Etat a dit clairement que si de telles informations étaient exactes, ces actions pourraient provoquer une escalade du conflit », a fait valoir la diplomatie américaine en rapportant la conversation téléphonique entre les deux ministres. D’après le département d’Etat, M. Kerry a précisément parlé avec son interlocuteur « d’informations évoquant une montée en puissance militaire russe imminente » en Syrie.
Si tel était le cas, cela « pourrait conduire à davantage de pertes de vies innocentes, à une augmentation du flot de réfugiés et à un risque de confrontation avec la coalition contre l’Etat islamique (EI) opérant en Syrie », s’est encore alarmé Washington qui pilote depuis un an des frappes militaires contre le groupe armé djihadiste en Syrie et en Irak.

USA fordern von Griechenland Flugverbot für russische Transporte nach Syrien...
ReplyDeleteDie USA haben laut inoffiziellen Informationen Griechenland dazu aufgefordert, seinen Luftraum für die Hilfsgüter zu sperren, die Russland nach Syrien schickt.
„Die US-Botschaft hat am Samstag die griechische Regierung darum gebeten, den Luftraum für russische Flugzeuge zu sperren“, meldete die Nachrichtenagentur RIA Novosti unter Verweis auf diplomatische Kreise in Athen. „Die Regierung Griechenlands lehnte dies ab, um Schaden für die Beziehungen mit Russland zu verhindern.“
Nach Angaben der Quelle hatte Athen zuvor Moskau erlaubt, vom 1. bis 24. September humanitäre Hilfe nach Syrien durch den griechischen Luftraum zu fliegen. Eine Bestätigung von offizieller Seite bleibt aus.
