China warns US of 'eventualities' in South China Sea

The Chinese navy has warned that further forays by the U.S. naval vessel into the waters claimed by China in the South China Sea may "trigger eventualities."

Chinese navy spokesperson Liang Yang made the comment following a U.S. warship's entering waters near the Nansha Islands on Tuesday.

The Chinese navy monitored, tracked and issued warnings to the USS Lassen, according to Liang, who said China's reaction is necessary, legitimate and professional.

"China's sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters is irrefutable," he said. "The Chinese navy will resolutely perform duties and missions to unswervingly safeguard national sovereignty, maritime rights and interests, and peace and stability in the South China Sea."

The spokesperson said the navy will closely monitor the situation in and above the sea for goings-on that may jeopardize China's national security.

  1. China Slams 'Brinkmanship' By US Navy in South China Sea ...

China denounced the United States for sending a warship close to an island that China claims and occupies in the South China Sea, declaring this was dangerous "brinkmanship" in waters that carry half the entire world's cargo, worth more than $5 trillion a year.

U.S. officials said Tuesday's "freedom of navigation" exercise by a guided-missile destroyer was completely legal and routine, and was not meant to question China's territorial claims.

The USS Lassen, escorted by American aircraft, passed within 12 nautical miles (20 kilometers) of a small reef that China has been expanding into a larger island through large-scale dredging operations.

U.S. officials said there were no incidents during the cruise by the Lassen, and that a Chinese vessel monitored the American ship's passage from a safe distance.

A commentary by the official Xinhua news agency, however, said the U.S. action was "a willful and harmful" brinkmanship, intended "to flex U.S. muscles at China's doormat and reassert Washington's dominant presence in the region."

    McCain: Long overdue

In Washington, Senator John McCain, a decorated war hero who served in the Navy and was held prisoner during the Vietnam War, said the U.S. naval maneuver was a long-overdue gesture.

"As China mounts increasingly routine challenges to the freedom of the seas through the Asia-Pacific region," McCain said, "it is more important than ever that the United States fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows. And the South China Sea must be no exception."

He called for regular air and naval patrols in the weeks and months ahead to make clear "the U.S. commitment to uphold freedom of the seas."

U.S. allies in the region welcomed the American ship's passage near the disputed Spratly Islands, although in more cautious terms.

Military officials in Washington said the approach to the Chinese-held Subi reef in the South China Sea was not related to questions of sovereignty over the islands there that also are claimed by Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines...........http://www.voanews.com/content/us-sends-ship-near-chinese-artificial-islands/3024390.html

  2. China warns US over incursion.....Beijing will ‘do whatever is necessary’ ...

China's foreign ministry on Tuesday expressed "strong discontent" over a US warship's "illegal entry" into waters near a reef in the South China Sea, threatening to take whatever measures are necessary against any deliberate provocations.

Experts said the announcement represented a warning from China, but that the nation is not willing to see an escalation into military conflict. Experts called for both parties to resort to legal and diplomatic approaches.

According to a Reuters report on Tuesday, one US defense official said the destroyer USS Lassen sailed within 12 nautical miles of Zhubi Reef.

A second defense official said the mission, which lasted a few hours, included Meiji Reef.

Earlier this year, China revealed that it was building civil and military facilities over both reefs, which are part of its Nansha Islands.

The operation was approved by US President Barack Obama, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing an anonymous official as saying that the mission was "routine."................http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/949401.shtml

  3. Trotz Proteste: USA schicken weitere Kriegsschiffe ins Südchinesische Meer – Medien...
