Pentagon’s remarks about land operation in Syria do not mean its announcement — (Kremlin)

Pentagon’s remarks about a possible US land operation in Syria should not be regarded as its announcement, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

"For the moment, it is simply necessary to study the details and understand what it (Pentagon) means," Peskov told journalists. He added that Pentagon’s statement published in the media was not the operation’s announcement.

Earlier, a number of media outlets reported that the United States was considering a possibility of starting land operations against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

The media referred to U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter who told the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services that the United States should go ahead with supporting the attacks of its partners fighting the IS, including on the ground.

The media also reported the United States could make a decision to send its special operations units to Syria in the days to come......... http://tass.ru/en/politics/832224

  1. The US has indicated a shift in its campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, including the use of direct ground raids...

Defence Secretary Ash Carter said there would also be more air strikes against "high-value targets".

Observers say his comments reflect acknowledgment of the lack of progress in defeating the militant group.

Separately, the US says Iran is being asked for the first time to international talks over Syria's war.

Mr Carter's comments, made to the Senate Armed Services Committee, come a week after US-Iraqi forces rescued dozens of hostages held by IS in Iraq.

"We won't hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL or conducting such missions directly, whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground," Mr Carter said, using an alternative acronym for IS........BBC

  3. Speaker of Russia’s Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko has said one should not take seriously statements about the US ground operation against the Islamic State terrorist group [banned in Russia] in Syria and Iraq....

"I would not take such statements seriously. This is unacceptable, that is too much," she told reporters.

The senator noted that "the United States was flagrantly violating international law," since its air force operations in Syria were conducted illegally without the authorization of the UN Security Council or a request from the authorities. "If we talk about ground operations, that would be another gross violation of international law," she added.

Earlier, some media reported that the United States was considering ground operations against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. In particular, they referred to a statement of US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

"We won't hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground," Carter said in testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee.

According to media reports, a decision may be taken at an early date on sending US special operations forces to Syria.

  4. White House: No 'Large-Scale' Ground Operations in Stepped-Up IS Fight...

The United States says it has "no intention to pursue long-term, large-scale ground combat operations" like in Afghanistan or Iraq, in its stepped-up offensive against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter Tuesday said the change in strategy would include more airstrikes and possible ground assaults.

White House Press Secretary Eric Schultz Wednesday backed up Carter's statement, making clear the United States "retain[s] the ability to conduct limited operations [in Syria] with partners as opportunities allow.”

"We're not talking full-blown attacks or assaults on major cities. We're talking about raids," said Colonel Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. "This is not embedding thousands of Americans with thousands or tens of thousands of Iraqis to conduct sustained offensive operations."............http://www.voanews.com/content/us-ground-operations-against-islamic-state-group/3026763.html
