All flights due to leave Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh for Britain this evening are to be delayed to allow a team of UK experts to assess security arrangements in place at the airport.
Prime Minister David Cameron is to chair a meeting of the government's Cobra emergencies committee this evening to review the situation.
All 224 people on board were killed when the Metrojet flight bound for St Petersburg from Sharm el-Sheikh came down in the Sinai desert.
A Number 10 spokeswoman said: "While the investigation is still ongoing we cannot say categorically why the Russian jet crashed.
"But as more information has come to light we have become concerned that the plane may well have been brought down by an explosive device.
"In light of this, and as a precautionary measure, we have decided that flights due to leave Sharm for the UK this evening will be delayed.
"That will allow time for a team of UK aviation experts, currently travelling to Sharm, to make an assessment of the security arrangements in place at the airport and to identify whether any further action is required. We expect this assessment to be completed tonight."
The nature of the crash and the lack of an SOS call have fuelled speculation that it was caused by a bomb or missile.
Mr Cameron spoke to Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi last night to discuss security measures at the popular holiday resort's airport.
Earlier, investigators from Ireland's Air Accident Investigations Unit said data from the Flight Data Recorder has been extracted and will be now analysed.
However, the Cockpit Voice Recorder was partially damaged in the crash and a "lot of work is required in order to extract the data from it".
Egypt is leading the investigation into the crash with assistance from Russia, Ireland, France and Germany.

Meanwhile, investigators have extracted and validated the contents of the flight data recorder, one of two so-called black boxes recovered from the Russian airplane that crashed in Egypt, Egypt's Civil Aviation Ministry said on Wednesday.

ReplyDeleteAccording to unnamed US intelligence officials speaking to CNN, the latest intel suggests that Metrojet Flight 9268 was likely brought down by an explosive device planted by ISIL or an ISIL affiliate.
"There is a definite feeling it was an explosive device planted in luggage or somewhere on the plane," the officials told CNN's Barbara Starr. "The feeling is that the explosive device somehow got by Sinai officials," Starr added.
The new assessment is based on intelligence reports collected gathered prior to Saturday's incident. While there was not necessarily indication of a specific threat before the crash, the official said "there had been additional activity in Sinai that had caught our attention."
The official stressed, however, that no formal conclusion has yet been reached.
