Kremlin says regrets Turkey has not acted to mend ties over downed Russian warplane

Russia regrets that Turkey has not taken the necessary steps to mend ties damaged by Ankara's shooting down of a Russian warplane near the Syrian border last year, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on June 1.

The Kremlin was still waiting for Turkey to apologise and to pay compensation for the incident, Peskov told reporters when asked to comment on remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who said on May 31 he did not understand what kind of a "first step" Moscow expected from Ankara.

“It is really thought-provoking that our relations with Mr. [Vladimir] Putin came to the current level from a very different point and [he] sacrificed Turkey due to a mistake or fault by a pilot. We should be involved in developing ties for sure and returning them to [where they were],” Erdoğan said.

Relations between Turkey and Russia have been tense since Turkey downed the Russian fighter jet on Nov. 24, 2015, on grounds of a border violation along Turkey’s border with Syria, leading to the death of two Russian soldiers.

While Turkey stated that it warned the Russian jet about its infraction multiple times, Russia denies this.

Following the jet crisis, Russia began imposing an embargo on Turkish goods as well as visas on Turkish travelers.
