Canadian Ethos: Trudeau says it's not Canada's place to 'lecture' US on immigration

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that it was not his place to "lecture" the United States on its immigration policies, while distancing himself from U.S. President Donald Trump's unapologetic defense of his controversial travel ban during a joint press conference on Monday.

"There have been times where we have differed in our approaches and that’s always been done firmly and respectfully," Trudeau said of US-Canadian relations.

"The last thing Canadians expect is for me to come down and lecture another country on how they choose they govern themselves. My role, my responsibility is to continue to govern in such a way that reflects Canadians’ approach and be a positive example in the world," the Prime Minister added.

Trudeau has taken a starkly contrasting position to Trump's hardline approach to immigration, reaffirming Canada's commitment to welcoming migrants and refugees in the wake of Trump's sweeping decree suspending the arrival of refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries.
