The multi-speed Europe may not mean a hierarchical division of the European Union (EU) and couldn't harm the unity of the EU, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault announced at a press conference in Bratislava on Friday.
"We shouldn't let Europe divide on east and west again. This belongs to the past," stressed Ayrault.
Ayrault stressed the European spirit within the member states, which, he said, should preserve the unity and cohesion.
"We need to put the protection of our interests and values, and not allow to prevail nationalism and extremism," he said.
Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak in this regard pointed out the importance of the common shaping the future of the European Union, which, he said, should meet the expectations of its citizens.
The two ministers also discussed the topic of Brexit. They declared a common interest of both countries that EU must come out this situation stronger.
