US President Donald Trump opened his first State of the Union address on Tuesday by saying his administration has made "incredible progress and achieved extraordinary success".
ReplyDelete"We have endured floods and fires and storms, but through it all, we have seen the beauty of America’s soul and the steel in America's spine."
Trump said that a "new tide of optimism was already sweeping across our land" when he took office a little more than a year ago. He said the US has gone forward with "a righteous vision" to "make America great again for all Americans".
Trump said that the United States would continue fighting the Islamic State (IS) until the radical group is defeated and called for bipartisanship over an immigration overhaul.
Trump also asked Congress to pass legislation to "help ensure American foreign-assistance dollars always serve American interests, and only go to friends of America".
He called on the Congress to pass legislation to stimulate at least $1.5 trillion in new infrastructure spending.
Trump offered no other details of the spending plan, such as how much federal money would go into it, but said it was time to address America's "crumbling infrastructure."
Rather than increase federal spending massively, Trump said:"Every federal dollar should be leveraged by partnering with state and local governments and, where appropriate, tapping into private-sector investment."
