Western Officials Deny Syrian State's Right to Defend Its Citizens against Terrorism

Eastern Ghouta
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Tuesday sent a letter to the UN Chief and President of the Security Council regarding the terrorist attacks being launched by armed groups in Eastern Ghouta against Damascus and Damascus countryside areas. The letter explained that the terrorists on Tuesday fired tens of shells against Damascus claiming the lives of and wounding tens of innocent civilians.

Over the past seven weeks, the armed terrorist groups in Eastern Ghouta have targeted Damascus with some 1500 rockets and mortar rounds that led to the martyrdom and wounding of hundreds of civilians, most of them women and children.

The ministry said in its letter that the terrorist attacks come while some western officials and other parties continue to launch anti-Syria campaigns aiming to directly support the terrorists and encourage them to terrorize and kill people without being punished. It added that these officials deny the Syrian state's right to defend its citizens, combat terrorism and fight all who practice, finance and support the terrorists.

The ministry went on to say that some western countries' preventing of the Security Council from condemning these terrorist crimes will send a message to the terrorists and their supporters to continue their crimes against the Syrian people and to take the citizens in Eastern Ghouta as human shields in order to serve the goals of the terrorists organizations and their supporting countries.

"These terrorist attacks won't weaken Syria's determination to continue fighting terrorism, restore security and stability to the Syrian people and build what the terrorists and their supporters have destroyed," the ministry affirmed, calling on the UN and the Security Council to immediately and strongly condemn the terrorist escalation which targets Damascus and its people in particular.

Syria also urges the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities towards preserving international peace and security through  adopting deterrent punitive procedures against the countries which have been supporting and financing terrorism in implementation of  relevant Security Council resolutions Nos. 2170. 2178, 2199 and 2253.
