Ces intempéries -tempêtes de sable accompagnés de foudre- ont arraché mercredi soir arbres, toits et poteaux électriques et causé des départs d'incendie. L'AFP cite pour sa part un bilan de 77 morts et 143 blessés.
Selon des responsables des autorités de gestion des catastrophes de ces deux États joints par l'AFP, les Etats de l'Uttar Pradesh et du Rajasthan ont été les plus touchés, avec respectivement 46 et 31 décès recensés à ce stade.
La plupart des morts ont été causées par des toits effondrés ou des chutes d'arbres ou de murs.

A powerful dust storm in northern India has killed more than 70 people and injured more than 140 others on Wednesday. Many reportedly died in their sleep while the storm swept through their homes.
