US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, September 14, to testify on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. The US officially finished its withdrawal of military, US citizens, and Afghan allies on August 31, ending the 20 years mission in the country following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. According to US President Joe Biden, the administration executed the largest airlift in US history, evacuating more than 120,000 people. Opposition Republican lawmakers and some Democrats have heavily criticised the evacuation efforts, especially after 13 US service members died during a suicide bombing attack near Kabul’s airport on August 26. About 100 US citizens currently remain in Afghanistan.
