Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin said a plane crash over the Mediterranean Sea that killed five U.S. military personnel involved a helicopter.
The military previously noted that the aircraft crashed for technical reasons while refueling in the air. The United States has deployed two aircraft-carrying strike groups in the Mediterranean Sea to protect Israel from potential allies of the ruling Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip.
"Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III on the Helicopter Crash in the Mediterranean Sea," Austin titled his condolences for the crash.
US President Joe Biden also expressed condolences.
