The US military on Friday carried out the first of what American officials have said will be a “multi-tiered” response to attacks by Iran-backed militias in the Middle East, US defense officials told Al Arabiya English.
Several targets were hit in Iraq and Syria, the officials said. No strikes were conducted inside Iran, which the Biden administration has blamed for the attacks on American troops in the region.
The latest attack by militias based in Iraq and Syria killed three American soldiers and wounded dozens more after a one-way Shahed drone struck a US base in Jordan last weekend.
Qatar’s television channel, Al Jazeera, said that the outskirts of the Syrian town of Abu Kamal, located in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor on the border with Iraq, had been bombed. In addition, the Al Arabiya television channel reported that there were explosions near the Al-Qa’im crossing on the Syrian-Iraqi border.
