ATACMS strikes on Bryansk Region sign West wants escalation — Lavrov

Ukraine’s strikes on Russia’s Bryansk Region using ATACMS missiles are a sign that the West is trying to escalate the situation, as such strikes are impossible without American help, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"The fact that multiple ATACMS were used last night against the Bryansk Region signals that they [in the West] want escalation. You see, it is impossible to use these high-tech missiles without the Americans, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly said this," Lavrov told a news conference after taking part in the Group of Twenty summit.

The top Russian diplomat recalled that the Russian leader had warned Western countries how Russia’s position would change if "this range of weapons that we are now talking about, i.e. up to 300 kilometers, is approved." "As a matter of fact, this is not about authorizing Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles. This is simply about declaring that from now on, we will be striking up to 300 kilometers," he added.

The Russian defense ministry said earlier that on Monday night into Tuesday, Ukraine attacked Russia’s borderline Bryansk Region with six ATACMS missiles. Five of them were shot down by Russia’s Pantsir and S-400 missile defense systems and one was damaged. The missiles fell down on the premises of a military facility in the Bryansk Region, causing a fire that was promptly put out. No one was hurt, and no damage was reported.

  1. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he expected the West to pore over Russia's entire updated nuclear doctrine.

"We have the foundations of the nuclear doctrine officially published now. Everything is confirmed there. What the president [of Russia Vladimir Putin] announced publicly a month or so back is already enshrined in law. And I hope that they [in the West] will read this doctrine. And not how they read the UN Charter, seeing there only what they need, but the doctrine in its entirety and interconnectedness," he said at a news conference following a Group of G20 summit.

According to Lavrov, he was asked on the sidelines of the summit whether reports that the US had allegedly authorized deeper strikes inside Russia with its long-range weapons were true.

"I replied: I don't know whether it is true or not true. We are in the business of ensuring our own security. We have said everything that those who are thinking about it need to know. We have said it officially. The president said it, and now we have already enshrined it in an official document," the minister said.

  2. Ukraine has fired US-supplied longer-range missiles at a target inside Russian territory for the first time, a day after Washington gave its permission for such attacks.

US officials confirmed use of the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) to CBS news, the BBC's US partner.

Russia's defence ministry earlier said the strike targeted the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine to the north on Tuesday morning.

Five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the region, the ministry said.

Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Washington of trying to escalate the conflict.

  4. Russia said that Ukraine's use of long-range ATACMS missiles against its territory marked a "new phase of the Western war" against it, and vowed to react "accordingly".

"We will be taking this as a qualitatively new phase of the Western war against Russia. And we will react accordingly," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference at the G20 summit in Brazil, accusing the US of helping Ukraine operate the missiles.

Earlier, Russia's military said that Ukraine fired US-supplied long-range missiles at a military facility in the Bryansk border region, in what would be the first attack since the US authorised the use of its weapons.

"At 03.25 am (12.25am Irish time), the enemy struck a site in the Bryansk region with six ballistic missiles. According to confirmed data, US-made ATACMS tactical missiles were used," the defence ministry was quoted as saying in a statement.

A senior Ukraine official told AFP that ATACMS had been used in the strike on Russia's border region.

  7. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey lavrov on Tuesday has called the use of the ATACMS ballistic missiles in Russia's Bryansk Region a signal that the West is seeking an escalation of the Ukraine conflict.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the armed forces of Ukraine struck with six ATACMS ballistic missiles at the Bryansk Region.
"You ask me a question, how do I know that what the New York Times published is true or an attempt to test the waters? I don't know. The fact that ATACMS missiles were used repeatedly in the Bryansk region tonight is, of course, a signal that they want an escalation," Lavrov told a news conference after the G20 summit in Brazil.
